Cowgirl Lantern

Yee haw, it's Cut It Up's 100th Challenge and what better way to celebrate than a HUGE Anything Goes Challenge?!  I say HUGE because the Design Team has more than doubled for this amazing party.  Yep, there are several DT members from the past joining us; that makes for some fun inspiration!  Wait, there's more!!  Not only has the DT grown, the prizes have multiplied like crazy!!  Yay, there are more sponsors for this event than you can imagine and that means lots of fun prizes!  You've got to see this to believe it!

My project is a Cowgirl Lantern.

This is a western take on the very popular fairy lanterns.  We will be having a special horsey camp-out here this summer and I thought this would be a fun project for the girls while they are resting from their horse riding/responsibilities.  

I started by sponging the inside of an old pickle jar with Gesso.  I added some Gesso to black acrylic paint to paint the lid a dark grey color.  

While that was drying, I went into Cricut Design Space.  I cut that sweet cowgirl from Doohickey Designs found at Digi Playground and the stars and horses from the Old West Cartridge.  

Once the jar was dry, I added some Spanish Moss to the bottom with a glue gun and adhered the cuts to the inside of the jar.   

Next, I used a hammer and nail to poke two holes in the lid for the handle.  I inserted craft wire into the holes and bent them.  Washi tape holds them in place.  

All that is left is inserting a battery operated tea light!  How fun and easy is this?

I decided the jar needed a little canvas ribbon and some twine.  

I think the girls are going to love this project.  Let's just hope they turn off these lanterns and get some sleep that evening!
